Steve is an Associate with Deasey, Mahoney & Valentini, Ltd. and concentrates his practice primarily in the areas of insurance coverage and bad faith litigation and insurance defense. He has represented insurance companies in a wide array of coverage disputes in state and federal trial and appellate courts.
He has counseled clients on issues involving general liability, construction defect, additional insured/risk transfer, excess and umbrella liability, auto liability, uninsured/underinsured, PIP/medpay, first party property, and homeowners insurance. His bad faith practice includes claims arising out of coverage disputes, excess verdict/judgment cases, time-limit demands, and alleged improper claim handling and unfair trade practices. Steve frequently provides insurance coverage opinions and advice to insurers throughout the claims handling process and has authored hundreds of coverage opinions, reservation of rights letters, and denial letters.
Prior to joining Deasey, Mahoney & Valentini, Ltd., Steve was an associate at Langsam, Stevens, Silver & Hollaender, a small boutique firm in Philadelphia where he specialized in providing insurance coverage advice to clients, as well as handling an assortment of general liability insurance defense matters. Prior to that, Steve spent several years as a Coverage Director for Casualty Claims at ACE USA (which later became Chubb). As a Coverage Director, Steve managed a high volume of insurance coverage litigation throughout the United States involving multi-million dollar claims dealing with a wide array of insurance coverage issues. Prior to joining ACE, Steve was Senior Counsel at Travelers, where he litigated, arbitrated, mediated and managed a significant caseload of complex insurance coverage and bad faith lawsuits. While at Travelers, Steve also provided coverage opinions and legal advice to a 500+ person claim center and conducted training on a wide variety of issues including contractual risk transfer, additional insured issues, claim file note documentation, ROR/declination letter writing, good faith/bad faith claim handling, fraud investigations, and EUOs.
Steve received his Juris Doctorate from Villanova University in 1998 and graduated cum laude. While in law school, Steve was an Associate Editor for the Villanova Law Review and inducted into the Order of the Coif. Steve received his Bachelors of Arts in Political Science from Rutgers University, where he graduated with Honors. While attending Rutgers, Steve was a member of Pi Sigma Alpha (National Political Honors Society) and successfully participated in the Political Science Departmental Honors Program.
Steve is married with five children. He has coached many of his children’s soccer, track and field, and baseball teams, and was involved in the Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts with his sons. He enjoys camping with his family and his outside interests include long distance running and competing in marathons and half-marathons.
Steve is admitted to practice before the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania, the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit, the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania, and the U.S. District Court for Eastern District of Pennsylvania.
